Change is the only constant: Why It’s Not as Scary as We Think

We typically dread change when we think about it. Change feels uncertain, uncomfortable, and often pushes us out of our familiar rhythms. And yet, as the old saying goes, change is the only constant.
Sometimes change can be reassuring—a refreshing start. Other times, it can feel scary and overwhelming. But if we really pause and think about it, is change truly that bad?

Finding Beauty in Small Shifts

Here in Victoria, British Columbia, summer has been shining bright, filling the city with warmth, light, and joy. But just a few weeks ago, something shifted. The skies opened up, rain began to drizzle, and the air filled with that sweet earthy scent only rain can bring.

It could have been easy to sigh and complain about the lack of sun. Instead, the shift was surprisingly welcome. That small change brought freshness, relief, and a reminder that even when seasons shift, life continues in beautiful ways.

Why We Fear Change

Most of us are conditioned to think in extremes: success or failure, happiness or sadness, light or dark. In this black-and-white mindset, change feels like a threat rather than an opportunity.

Personally, I’ve often looked at change with uncertainty. It has felt daunting—like stepping into a fog where nothing is clear. But the truth I’ve discovered is this: the more I navigate through transitions, the more I realize that change isn’t the enemy—it’s a teacher.

The Mindset Shift: From Fear to Growth

Instead of preemptively labeling change as “scary,” what if we approached it with curiosity? What if we allowed ourselves to:

  • Learn from what change is teaching us.

  • Accept that transitions are a natural part of life.

  • Trust that new beginnings often lead to unexpected joy.

When we lean into change instead of resisting it, we often find growth, resilience, and a stronger connection to ourselves.

Embracing Change in Everyday Life

You don’t have to make massive leaps to embrace change. Start small:

  • Notice the beauty in seasonal shifts.

  • Reframe challenges as opportunities for growth.

  • Practice flexibility instead of clinging to control.

  • Remember that no season, no moment, no difficulty is permanent.

Change isn’t here to break us. It’s here to shape us.

Whether it’s the transition of seasons in Victoria, BC, or personal life shifts that feel uncertain, change reminds us that life is in constant motion. Instead of resisting, we can choose to welcome it—because often, it’s not as bad as we fear.

Change might feel uncomfortable at first, but more often than not, it carries with it the seeds of growth, clarity, and new beginnings.

✨ So the next time change comes knocking, ask yourself: is this really something to fear—or could it be something to embrace?
